The computer local networking applications covered are those oriented to a system-user interface - the local area network; those oriented toward the interaction of the mainframe processor with its storage and input-output support systems - the input-output channel; and those relating to enhancing the effective processing power of a system - the shared memory network. Implementing these networks with a high-performance technology like fiber optics (FO) accelerates the overlap of these applications as well as opening the possibilities for new applications with computing systems.
