Three models have been proposed to describe the basic physics underlying development process in which toner comes off the carrier particles and ends up on the latent image of the photoconductor. They are: the powder cloud model, the equilibrium model and the field stripping model. It is concluded in this paper that the physics of solid area development in the IBM 6670 magnetic brush development system is described by the equilibrium model of development with size classification of toner occuring as the voltage (i. e. the electric field) is changed.
