The PowerPC memory is innovative because it incorporates leading-edge approaches to hiding the latency of memory accesses. Although features like access reordering have long been the subject of academic research, such improvements are only now coming into widespread commercial use. Using these features requires a shift in thinking, but designers and programmers can achieve significant performance advantages. We also compare the PowerPC memory to the DEC Alpha and Mips R4000 storage architectures. © 1995 IEEE
