The signal decay and pulse width dependent remanent coercivities of a series of granular CoCr22Pt14 longitudinal magnetic recording media samples were examined as function of temperature, sample thickness, and recording density. Results show that the coercivity measurements, which are carried out over a large dynamic range are much more sensitive to thermal effects than signal decay measurements. An experimental stability parameter, (1/C)0 of 36 is found sufficient to avoid substantial thermally induced signal-decay at low linear densities for the discussed set of samples.
