Bio

Juana C. Becerra Sandoval is a historian of science and technology and Staff Research Scientist in the Responsible Tech group at IBM Research. Her research examines histories of epistemology, subjectivity, automation and computing across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and situates their relevance for understanding the present-day societal, ethical, and legal implications of AI technologies.

She is the Co-PI of an NEH-funded project on Machine Listening in the Age of AI that investigates the datafied representations of sound within AI/ML systems and explores their potential societal risks and ethical concerns. Her work on responsible AI and tech ethics has been recognized amongst the most impactful by the Responsible AI Institute and covers a variety of topics, including algorithmic impact assessments (AIAs), public participation in AI oversight, and AI safety. Her research can be found in venues such as Science, the Journal of Responsible Computing, the Proceedings for the ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency, the Proceedings for the ACM Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, and the Proceedings of the ACM SIGCHI Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work & Social Computing.

Juana holds an M.A. in History of Science from Harvard University and a double B.S. in Physics and Science, Technology and Society (STS) from MIT.
